Can GraphQL sit in front of our existing APIs?

Yes, and it is a common way to adopt it without a rewrite. The schema becomes a layer over the REST services and databases you already run, so front-end teams get one interface while everything behind it stays where it is for now.

Is GraphQL harder to cache?

Yes, and anyone saying otherwise is glossing. REST gets HTTP caching almost for free, while GraphQL needs caching designed deliberately at the field and client level. It is solvable, but it is real work and belongs in the estimate rather than after it.

Is GraphQL a security risk?

Only if you leave the defaults. A schema lets a client request deeply nested data, which someone can abuse to overload your server. Depth limits, complexity scoring, and persisted queries close that off, and we configure them from the start.

Do we need to replace our REST API?

No. The two coexist perfectly well, and most of our clients run both. Public integrations and simple webhooks often stay REST, while the apps move to GraphQL. Replacing something that works is rarely where the return actually is.

Open a typical app screen and count the calls behind it. Fetch the profile, then their orders, then the products in each order, then stock levels for each product. Four round trips at minimum, usually more, each one waiting on the one before it to finish. On office wifi nobody notices. On a train that screen takes six seconds and people close the app.

GraphQL collapses that into a single request describing the whole shape at once, answered in one round trip. It matters most on mobile, where latency rather than bandwidth is what makes an application feel slow, and it is the version of the argument that survives a conversation with a finance director, because it comes down to the app feeling faster with no new infrastructure.

The types come before the resolvers, because a schema shaped around whatever the database happens to look like is the one nobody wants to query a year later.

DataLoader batches the nested lookups, so a query returning fifty records does not quietly become fifty-one trips to the database.

Depth caps and complexity scoring are set before launch, because a schema with no limits lets one request ask for enough work to take the server down.

Field and client level caching is designed in rather than assumed, since GraphQL gets none of the HTTP caching REST receives for free.
